VIS Students Lead the Charge Against Plastic Pollution
On Monday, April 22, Vienna International School (VIS) joined global efforts to raise awareness on Earth Day, celebrating the hope for a sustainable future on our beautiful planet Earth. This year, our focus was on the critical issue of plastic waste, and we implemented actions around the school to enhance our recycling efforts.
As part of our Earth Day celebration, Grade 2 and Class 4A students participated in a school playground cleanup activity. This hands-on experience not only improved our school environment but also fostered thoughtful reflections among the students. Here are some of their insights:
- “It doesn’t take much time to put something in the bin.
- I realised that a lot of people don’t seem to care, they think someone else will pick up things for them.
- I felt good that the Grade 2 students are learning about this so hopefully we will make better choices.
- We need to be better informed about what goes into each recycling bin. Sometimes we don’t know how to do it correctly.
- I didn’t know we could help by collecting bottle tops.
- I didn’t realise how many people think that it doesn’t matter if they drop just a little bit of rubbish. I didn’t realise how quickly it adds up when we all make that choice.
- I realised just how much plastic waste there was once we started looking for it.”
Our secondary students also contributed to the Earth Day efforts by creating an informative cartoon campaign to raise awareness about plastic pollution.
We encourage our entire community to engage with these educational materials and take actionable steps towards a plastic-free future for future generations. Earth Day is not just a day; it is a movement! For more information and to get involved, visit Earth Day’s website. Together, we can make a lasting impact on our environment.
