This year’s original Grade 4/5 Elementary Musical, “Messin’ with the Timeline” was a powerful journey of confidence, creativity and collaboration for ISP students and faculty.

The musical rehearsals began in September once a week as an After School Activity with a weekend rehearsal closer to the performance date. With months of dedicated rehearsals, students learned lines, choreography, and stage positioning, while also developing an understanding of their individual roles within the larger production.

The production flourished under a dedicated team of educators who blended acting, music, and choreography into one seamless, magical experience. Guided by the musical vision of Ms Suzanne, Ms Corky ’ focus on choreography, and the thoughtful acting direction of Ms Ashley, the team created a space where Elementary students could fully develop their roles. With the help of Mr Josh, Main Theatre Manager, and a talented team of eight Middle School students who took on the role of technical crew, this production was a true collaboration between all students.

The cast of “Messin’ with the Timeline” included 19 Elementary students who were dedicated throughout every step of the process. Students were able to step out of their comfort zone and work together with their fellow classmates.

“At the beginning of the rehearsal process, many students were quite timid. But as they began to explore their characters and understand who they were on stage, they really came into their own.”      Ms Ashley, PYP Coordinator

The focus extended beyond memorizing lines to exploring character, storytelling, and creative expression, allowing each student to find their own voice on stage.

Inspired by themes connected to the world around us, Ms Suzanne, Elementary School Music Teacher, wanted the musical content to encourage students to think beyond the stage, reflect on history, global challenges, and how they can learn from the past to create a better future. The musical’s storyline followed four aliens who came to Earth to demonstrate the importance of history. They “un-invented” key innovations such as vaccinations, and the internet, allowing the students’ characters to experience a world without these advancements. Through these scenarios, the story explored how history shapes the present and future, while emphasizing critical thinking, the responsible use of information, and the value of collaboration.

What made this production especially unique was the professional quality of the experience. Students performed alongside high-quality backing tracks, thoughtfully arranged and orchestrated by Mr Andy, incorporating live instruments to create a rich and engaging sound. Alongside the outstanding efforts of the student tech team and the seamless collaboration between the teachers Ashley, Corky, and Suzanne, students experienced what it felt like to be part of a truly professional production.

“We all bring different strengths to the musical, but it’s a very collaborative process, and the students are a big part of that. They come in with their own ideas, especially in movement and performance, and it becomes something we create together as a group.”        Ms Corky, Elementary School Counsellor

Beyond the success of the final performance, the musical helped students develop essential skills that extend far beyond the stage. They learned to take risks, work as a team, stay organized, and persevere through challenges.

“Putting yourself on stage, speaking lines on your own or singing a solo, is a huge risk, especially at this age. But that’s exactly what they did. They supported each other, worked as a team, and by the end you could really see how much their confidence had grown. It was incredible to watch.” – Ms Suzanne, Elementary Music Teacher

“Messin’ with the Timeline” showcased not only the creativity of Grade 4/5 students, but their ability to take risks, support one another, and step into the spotlight with confidence. Whether it was remembering lines, managing costume changes, or supporting a peer, every student played an important role in the success of the production.
