This month in Kyiv International School, the Environmental Science students were presented with fibers found at a simulated crime scene. Their mission? Identify the source of the mysterious strands and match them to potential suspects—using science, of course!
Students began by comparing the unknown fibers to samples from common fabrics like cotton, polyester, and wool. They analyzed texture and color under magnifying lenses and stereoscopes, then moved on to more advanced techniques. The burning test gave clues about each fiber’s composition—was it natural or synthetic? Did it smell like burning paper or plastic? And under UV light, some fibers glowed, revealing hidden dyes and finishes.
By the end of the investigation, students not only solved the mystery but also learned how environmental science can play a role in forensic work. It was a fun, illuminating way to explore the hidden world of fabrics—and a great reminder that science is everywhere, even in the threads we wear!
