On May 23, 2025, AISB’s grade 10 Journalism students published their second issue of The Bite Magazine. They distributed copies to every student in the Secondary in a “Drop Everything and Read The Bite” event that lasted over 45 minutes in the school day. Students put away their screens and read the 64-page, full-color magazine that showcased a variety of content ranging from opinions, features, reviews, crosswords, quizzes, and a summer travel guide.
While the Journalism program maintains an esteemed online portal (thebite.aisb.ro) as well as an Instagram account (@thebite_aisb), Journalism teacher Chuck Adams revived the print magazine this school year in order to help fully convert the class into a true Design course, with students writing, editing, and prototyping their page designs using Canva as the collaborative layout tool, in addition to the Adobe Creative Suite. Moreover, the net effect of putting a physical copy directly into students hands, Adams says, is that “AISB’s secondary students—our target audience—are fully reading and interacting with the content our student journalists produce, generating buzz in a way that just doesn’t quite happen on our website. The content provokes conversations.”
This community event followed the success of the first iteration of the “Drop Everything…” release event for the winter issue of the magazine, which took place in mid-December.
In a survey of AISB secondary students, over 75% of respondents said they were more likely to read content produced by The Bite student journalists in a printed magazine compared to the website. After reading the magazine, Business Management and Economics teacher, Justin Clouden exclaimed: “This looks fantastic. Print media is NOT dead.” Indeed it is not, and it may point to the future of cutting edge school Journalism programs.
