Integrating Global Citizenship into Classroom Practice by Chandra McGowan and Brent Pinkerton, mathematic teachers at the International School of Helsinki

This presentation will discuss how two educators in the International School of Helsinki approach the incorporation of global citizenship in the Mathematics, English, and Advisory classrooms.

Motivated by the school´s vision to promote thoughtful action, teachers at the school empower students to define and personally connect with the term global citizenship.  Each teacher will discuss how global citizenship is considered within his and her own subject area, as well as collaboratively across the entire grade level during advisory lessons with the students.  Using Oxfam’s characteristics of global citizenship and Myer’s curricular topics for the K-12 classroom as a guide for instruction, lessons and activities will be shared.

The presentation will discuss the links between International Mindedness and the IB Learner Profile toward the development of Global Citizenship.
