Pechersk School International Kyiv Hosts Math Counts

Pechersk School International Kyiv recently hosted a CEESA Math Counts competition for four schools.

As well as PSI, three other schools participated: The American School of Warsaw, The American International School Vienna and Kyiv International School. The event began on Friday morning with an opening ceremony in the library and then the two individual rounds.  First was the Sprint round which consisted of 30 questions that students completed in 40 minutes.  Next was the Target round; in this round students answered eight questions that were distributed two at a time.  Students were given 6 minutes to complete each pair of questions.  After lunch Mr. Marshall prepared a quiz game involving interesting mathematical facts about Kyiv.  In the afternoon students braved the ice for a tour of the Chernobyl Museum.

On the Saturday morning the teams reconvened for the Team round.  In this section teams of 3 or 4 students worked together to complete ten problems in 20 minutes.  The final round was a head-to-head competition between the students with the 10 highest scores.  Students competed in pairs.  Each pair was asked a minimum of 3 questions.  The student with the most correct answers went on to compete with the next challenger until a winner emerged. The winner was Seo Yoon from ASW.  The winning team was also from ASW (Seo Yoon, Max S, David, Li Gong).

PSI was given the fair play award for good sportsmanship and treating the other competitors, coaches and helpers with kindness and respect. This award was voted on by all the participants and, as the hosting school, our Math Counts team was very proud to accept this award on behalf of the school!
