Learning Support Services at ISB Lower School

The mission of the Student Support Department at the International School of Belgrade (ISB) is: “In partnership with the ISB Community the Student Support Department works to meet the diverse needs of every student to achieve their highest potential for success.”

To that end, the learning support teachers at ISB Lower School provide direct and indirect services to students, and work with families and staff on raising awareness, educating, and celebrating the success of students with learning exceptionalities.

ISB Lower School provides Learning Support for students with mild learning challenges, i.e. for students who require up to 180 minutes of support per week to access our PYP curriculum. Our school model of services includes both push-in and pull-out services depending on the need(s) of each child. Families of students who require additional services not offered by ISB are referred to work with local specialists (psychologist, speech therapist, psychical therapist and occupational therapist).

The Student Study Team (SST) is a problem-solving committee working towards addressing the individual needs of students with the goal of optimizing student success. In order to facilitate and maximize student achievement, we use the RtI - Response to Intervention approach, which helps to target and identify specific behaviors, and provides interventions to reduce academic challenges in order to foster students’ learning.

The ISB Lower School is dedicated to working in partnership with teachers and families to provide the optimal education for students in need of academic and/or behavioral support. The ISB Student Support team works at all grade levels to provide services for students struggling to keep up with the academic expectations of the classroom. Furthermore, the services are also available for students at various grade levels who are in need of additional academic challenges. The Student Support Department at ISB is a learner-centered team that believes in respecting students’ individual profiles and creating student-targeted goals in response to identified and assessed needs. Within a framework of professional collaboration and home to school partnership, the ISB Lower School aims to provide students and teachers with an opportunity to engage in best practices around access and extensions to learning.

The School does not have a ‘Gifted and Talented’ program per se. However, the IB programs are designed to extend the learning of all students, particularly those with advanced skills or aptitudes in certain areas of the curriculum. An Extended Learning teacher is available at the Lower school to provide instructional support to students of significantly high ability levels.

Besides Learning Support, the ISB Lower School offers English as an Additional Language (EAL), counseling and health services.
