"Language stands at the center of the many interdependent cognitive, affective, and social factors that shape learning." (David Corson)
Consequently, International School of Belgrade, in line with the IB offers an international education that promotes intercultural understanding and "the ability to communicate in a variety of modes in more than one language ." The rich development of language and literacy for all learners is an essential element of our teaching philosophy and as such, the school meets the requirements of the IB Program Standards and Practices:
"The school has a written language policy (including provision for second-language teaching and mother tongue language support) that meets the needs of the students and reflects the principles of the program."
English is the language of instruction at ISB, and therefore has priority in the school's language program. In order to enable all students in the school to access the curriculum in a manner that allows them to benefit fully from their education and to reach their full potential, ISB provides the English as an Additional Language (EAL) program for all students for whom English is not their mother tongue. ISB recognizes that learning a second language is a developmental process that occurs over time. Other foreign languages offered at ISB include French, Spanish, Serbian at the Lower and Middle School. In addition to that, German ab initio course is offered to our Diploma students. Recognizing the importance of Mother Tongue, ISB promotes after school mother tongue program (Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, German, Portuguese, Swedish, and Chinese), and for the Diploma students, ISB supports the self-taught courses in Hindi, Hebrew, Russian, Norwegian, Polish, Turkish.
