Every August, students living in the mahalla (Uzbek for neighborhood) surrounding Tashkent International School (TIS) start getting ready for school. New notebooks, pencils, pens, math tools and bright backpacks are just some of the things on the list as they prep for the start of school.
For some of these students, however, the cost of supplies is outside the family budget. To help these low-income families, local businesses and other neighbors within the mahalla traditionally come together to assist these students and provide them the supplies they need.
On Wednesday, August 27, TIS Director David. G. Henry presented 50 packets of new school supplies to the mahalla committee on behalf of the school, which were then distributed to local students in need. The packets each included a sketchbook, colored pencils, notebooks, pens, an eraser and a sharpener.
TIS is proud to have been included in this list of local donors and considers it part of the school’s ongoing Corporate and Social Responsible program, which has also included collecting clothing and other needed items for local orphanages.
Mr. Henry was joined at the mahalla office by Shakhnoza Valieva, TIS host country coordinator and teacher, Nodira Nazarova, TIS executive assistant and Rashid Suleymanov, TIS property manager.
“TIS has been a part of this mahalla community since 2004 when we moved to this campus and a part of Tashkent since 1994,” said Mr. Henry, noting that TIS will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year. “This is a great community and we are excited that we can give back to our neighbors - the families and students who live, work and study right next door.”
Each fall grade 11 students from TIS also assist their mahalla neighbors by donating food packets to needy families and helping clean and paint in portions of the neighborhood as part of the Grade 11 IB Induction Week. Last year younger TIS students also helped local students by offering after-school English lessons to children in the mahalla. They hope to continue the program this year.
Tashkent International School, an International Baccalaureate World School, is a not-for-profit, independent, co-educational day school located in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in the heart of Central Asia. The school has 500 students from 45 countries in preschool through grade 12. TIS is the only school in Uzbekistan authorized to offer all three IB programmes.
