Literacy Coaching Cohort - 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years

After the success of the third regional Literacy Coaching Cohort program we would like to announce a fourth cohort to begin in the Fall of 2017 and end in the spring of 2019, facilitated by Dr. Monica Medina and Ms. Shannon Beckley.



A knowledgeable, well trained literacy coach can support the work of principals and curriculum specialists by providing deep and sustainable change in literacy instruction at the classroom level. The literacy coach is someone who can induct and mentor new teachers, organize professional book studies, create level bookrooms and provide demonstration on teaching as well as engage in side by side coaching in ways that principals and curriculum leaders are not able to. The Literacy Coach Cohort training supports the CEESA mission of being a collaborative community of international schools which enhances school effectiveness and inspires student learning and development.


The first ECIS/CEESA international training program for literacy coaches started in the fall of 2011. The second cohort started in 2013 and the third started in 2015. In all three sessions the CEESA group of approximately 25 participants was comprised from different countries and schools across four regions in the international world. Under the direction of Carrie Ekey, Monica Medina, Katherine Casey and Shannon Stanton these teachers completed the two year program at CEESA Spring Educators Conference in Prague in 2013, in Dubrovnik in 2015 and in Sofia in 2017. The opportunity for in depth training over time and the chance to network with literacy specialists from schools around the world have been especially valuable to the participants.

European "Literacy Coaching" Cohort Details:

CEESA would like to offer a fourth cohort starting in November 2017. The training is designed to help cohort participants support their schools while deepening their own knowledge of literacy and assessment. They will learn ways to facilitate small groups of teachers in analysis of student work, begin to understand adult learners, as well as analyze the curricular components necessary to a balanced literacy program. Midway through the year Shannon Beckley, literacy consultant, will join the group and provide training in coaching models of demonstration on teaching, coaching conferences and side by side coaching.

The cohort participants will deepen their coaching skills as well as continue to strengthen their professional network of teacher leaders. While the sessions provide extensive support for aspiring literacy coaches, it always includes
teachers who are interested in increasing their literacy knowledge and becoming a literacy leader in their school.

The registration fee of the host school sessions covers the costs for 1 or 2 consultants (flights, hotel, honorarium, meals) shared equally by the cohort.

Also included is a small daily fee for transportation, lunch and coffee breaks.

The cohort allows up to 25 participants.

Placeholder figures based on this year’s costs would be around: 500 Euro depending on local costs in the various cities where we meet: Airfare, hotel and other expenses are the responsibility of the participant as is the booking of these.

Often, as cohort members get to know each other, they often share housing costs in order to limit expenses. Food will be provided during the day.

The conference fee reflects the Pre and Main conference fees so budget on about 450 Euro for CEESA conference registration. So the registration costs over the two years would be about 2450 Euro excluding airfares, hotels and food.
