Initially, general background information regarding the concept and practice of personalized learning and self-directed learning will be supplied. The differing reasons why students need to develop as autonomous, self-directed learners will be outlined. Models from schools in which the program has been used, and in which it has been successful, will be included. I will go on to discuss the model implemented at IICS, and the advantages and benefits for students at the school (focusing, for example, on the importance of collaboration). The talk will conclude by looking at some of the potential problems/set-backs encountered, and discuss ways in which these might be overcome.
Direct evidence from the students themselves, the teachers involved, and the school’s administration will be provided, mainly in the form of taped interviews and written testimonials.
