Putting the Learning Back in Service Learning by Adam Carter

Research consistently shows that service learning projects, if designed with the student's learning and impact on the community in mind, yield incredible dividends, by increasing empathy, sparking deep learning and allowing students to recognize their own agency in tackling real-world issues.

Too often, service learning projects are stand-alone activities unrelated to school curricula wherein students suddenly find themselves dropped off at Project X told to carry out Activity Y. As educators, we have an amazing opportunity (and responsibility) to design engaging service learning experiences that will allow students to first learn about the issue being addressed, have a role in designing the method of outreach and then carry out their service in a meaningful manner.

Drawing upon the current trends in service learning, as well as Mr Carter's many years of experience in designing and implementing effective service learning projects, teachers and administrators will walk away with practical, ready-to-implement steps they can immediately deliver to their schools. In addition, Mr Carter will provide tips for administrators looking to establish a service learning coordinator position at their schools.
