Differentiation: Making Inclusion Happen

Led by Ochan Kusuma-Powell at the American International School of Zagreb, April 28-29, 2017.

How can we help teachers along their journey towards differentiating instruction in mixed readiness classes? This interactive and practical two-day workshop will give participants a framework to develop skills and approaches for differentiating instruction in inclusive classrooms. Using a “double track” curriculum of theory embedded in skills, educators will observe and participate in the “process” of differentiated teaching as it is orchestrated, modeled and explicated.

  • CEESA Member or Associate Member Schools - $300
  • Non-CEESA Member Schools - $400

Participants will pay for travel, hotel and miscellaneous meals. Information about the hotel will follow. Lunch and coffee breaks are included in the workshop. Transportation for the meeting will be provided.

Hotel rooms have been reserved at the Hotel Dubrovnik right by the main square in Zagreb. This reservations form allows you to access the special conference rates. The hotel advises you NOT to use third parties (booking.com, travel agents, Hotel website, etc.) to make your reservations because they do not apply the special conference rates.

Deadline for hotel room reservations is Monday, March 27th, 2017. After this date the hotel cannot guarantee the special room rate, nor the availability.

TYPE OF ROOM AND RATES:

  • single room – 87 EUR daily, bed&breakfast
  • double room single use  – 103 EUR daily, bed&breakfast
  • double room double  use  – 115 EUR daily, bed&breakfast

Extra charge city tax 1 EUR per person daily.

SPECIFICALLY, THE WORKSHOP WILL FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING KEYS TO DIFFERENTIATION:

  • Knowing your students (and yourself as a teacher):
  • Student characteristics, including; cognition, temperament, intelligence, preferences, and learning style
  • Learning needs: learning disabilities, ESL, ADHD, gifted and talented
  • Methods of data collection, including Cognitive Coachingsm, clinical observation, academic/non-academic grading
  • Using student work/collaborative assessments as a way of knowing our students

KNOWING YOUR CURRICULUM:

  • Teaching at a conceptual level
  • Backward design
  • Meditating higher order thinking
  • Asking meditative questions
  • Developing assessments for differentiation

DEVELOPING A REPERTOIRE OF STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVE DIFFERENTIATION:

  • Lesson planning for diversity
  • Flexible grouping
  • Specific differentiation strategies

LEARNING TO KEEP IT SIMPLE AND SOCIAL

  • Collaborative skills for differentiation

PREREQUISITES: IMPORTANT NOTE: Each participant will need copies of Making a Difference: Differentiation in International Schools and Making the Difference: Learning Guide. The cost is US $ 20 for book + shipping.

OUTCOMES:

Teachers will:

  • Practice different strategies that will allow them to develop learning profiles for their students
  • Explore the connections between conceptual teaching and differentiation (integrating Understanding by Design and differentiation)
  • Develop specific instructional strategies that promote differentiation
  • Explore and practice the skills of collaboration in planning a different lesson

TARGETED AUDIENCE: Teachers KG through High School, Administrators.

LEVEL: The workshop is differentiated. There are multiple access points. So it is suitable for novice and the more experienced teacher.
