Worth the Risk: MENTORING the Self-Directed Learner (SDL) by Eric Démoré and John Notten

This presentation will explore the unique Teacher Advisor role, as well as illustrate how a teacher’s role needs to adjust to the new demands of a personalized learning environment.

Innovative educational approaches like SDL can be risky as students are faced with the challenge of becoming the architects of their own learning.  These risks, associated with the loosening of traditional classroom structures and the unparalleled freedoms that SDL offers, require effective supports -- or the whole system will collapse.

This presentation will explore the unique Teacher Advisor role, as well as illustrate how a teacher’s role needs to adjust to the new demands of a personalized learning environment.

Please note: This is a follow up to the session, "Worth the Risk: The Adventure of Self-Directed Learning". It is recommended that these two sessions are attended in sequence.

Eric Démoré holds a Bachelor of Music (Theory & Composition) and a Master of Arts (English) from the University of Western Ontario. After studying for 20 years, Eric began to learn how to learn.

As a high school English teacher, Eric encourages his learners to be literate, creative communicators. He believes that students learn best when they are handed control of the learning process. Inspired by the work of literacy champions Penny Kittle, Linda Rief, and Kathy G. Lundy, Eric aims to foster in his learners a passion for the written word and the art of storytelling. It can be done.
Eric also writes, meditates, and runs long distances in Toronto, a city which he explores with his wife, Katie. They own a cat, but really it is she who owns them.
