Supporting ESL Zero Beginners in the Secondary School by Carmem Wilson, ELL teacher and coach at the Anglo-American School of Sofia

In this workshop, Carmen intend to demonstrate different strategies used to help zero beginners bridge the language gap so they can gradually feel more engaged, supported and prepared for today and tomorrow. She will provide detailed insight into ESL curriculum design as well as coaching teachers of other subjects, vis-à-vis the hypotheses that every teacher is a language teacher. As for curriculum design, Carmem will provide examples of how to customise programmes according to specific needs. As for coaching teachers, she will provide examples of different types of interventions. For example, observing lessons, peer teaching, raising teachers’ awareness to ESL students’ needs, PD meetings, working on lesson and test differentiation etc.
