What is The World Virtual School Project?

wvsThe World Virtual School Project (WVS) is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Office of Overseas Schools to assist participating schools and regions in terms of curriculum quality and continuity, opportunities for collaboration, progressive professional development, and resiliency in the face of natural or man-made emergencies.

This unique project is premised on the assumptions that:

  • schools value the integration of relevant and effective online resources for their varied learning communities;
  • schools value working regionally to collaborate and to share perspectives and methodologies, and to consider and nurture best practices;
  • schools value their integrity in the face of adversity, and seek cost-effective and reliable means of assuring continuity of operations.

The World Virtual School Network now provides coordination of a network of learning management systems for participating international schools to use affordable and reliable online academic resources for day-to-day instruction, for continuity of operations during times of emergency, and for fostering and supporting collaboration directly among participating schools, among regional associations, and at the multi-regional (global) level.

CEESAnet Project

The CEESAnet Project enters its fifth year of operation this fall. Moodle affords each participating school considerable independent control, and Moodle also proves to be much more accessible to both teachers and students as an effective educational tool. Moodle offers a wide-range of functionality designed around a core structure of customizable homepage with learning activities organized into “courses”. Pupils are given login access to the Moodle and then enrolled in the “courses” relevant to them. Each course can be designed to include resources and activities. Typical activities include: assignments, quizzes, hot potato questionnaire, forums, chats, messages, and Wiki. Typical resources include: shared files, links or html pages. Parents can also be issued a password to view their child’s assignments and can communicate with their child’s teachers.

Last year, the CEESAnet Project began with eight schools with the start up and management as the main focus. This year the CEESAnet Project serves 14 schools. Our main objectives for the current year are use of the educational power of Moodle, for communication and collaboration within a specific school and with other schools in the region. Also to connect schools into CEESAnet network to make collaboration on Ceesa.net Moodle site possible. CEESA is hosting a technology meeting in Moscow, Russia October 6th-9th, 2011. One of the main topics of discussion is the World Virtual School Project. The power of Moodle will be discussed as well as ways to share methodologies regarding best practices for blended learning in the classroom.

The CEESAnet Project Administrator, Neven Soric, works with each of the schools in the project to assist in implementation. Please contact him for additional information at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
